Moore State Park

Things are beginning to warm up so we took advantage of the nice weather we had yesterday and visited one of our favorite spots for hiking, Moore State Park.  The park has several trails which surround Turkey Hill Brook.  The energy produced from the waterfalls was once used to power several mills in the 1700s.  We took our cameras and have uploaded our favorite photos to our blogs.  Be sure to visit James, Maggie, and Delia to see their photos from our hike.

Coco Key Water Park Writing Prompt by Raven Shrift

This week’s writing prompt is inspired by our recent trip to Coco Key Indoor Water Park. Since you already have a little experience writing in the first person, I would like you to once again write in the first person… with a small twist:

I would like you to write as though you are the tube or slide rather than the person riding on them. What would you see? smell? feel? hear? taste? (ew!) You can be the tube on the lazy river or in one of the slides.

Have fun with this. I will post mine on my blog when it is finished. Remember, no peeking. I want everyone’s writing to be original, inspired by their own imaginations.

Our first Whale Watch

Whale Fluke

Whale Fluke

Last weekend we went on our first whale watch in Boston, MA to celebrate Delia’s 7th birthday.  We were taken to Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary, which is a popular place for whale watching on the east coast of the United States.  There are a variety of marine mammals including whales, dolphins,  and sea birds.

We were told that this area is home to several kinds of large whales.  There have been sightings of humpback whales, finback whales, minke whales,  pilot whales and even right whales.  Unfortunately, the older whales had already begun migrating for the winter and the only whales thought to remain were the juveniles.  We did get to see the steam rising up from the water when the whales would surface and occasionally got glimpses of the whales fins and flukes (tails).

The boat ride was lots of fun, although many of the passengers on board got very seasick because the sea was a bit rough.  It was difficult to keep balance from all of the movement and we had fun trying to stand without falling.

The day after we got home we explored online to find more information about whales and came across a wonderful website in Australia called Welcome to the Discovery .
